MRI helium quench pipe sizing · indicative design aid · verify with magnet manufacturer
Indicative only. This estimates helium release, peak quench flow and pipe pressure drop from first principles. Near the magnet the vented gas is extremely cold and dense; it warms and expands along the run. The magnet manufacturer specifies the peak flow and the maximum back-pressure the turret can tolerate. Size the pipe to stay under that limit and have the design signed off by a qualified engineer.

Free indicative tool · QuenchIQ · TradieRoles Tools · © FTC Group Pty Ltd (ABN 70 694 989 994). Estimates use ambient helium expansion, ideal-gas density at the entered temperature and a Darcy–Weisbach pressure drop with bend K-factors (K=0.3 per long-radius 90°). These are indicative only and ignore compressibility, phase and thermal effects. Governing peak flow and maximum back-pressure must come from the magnet manufacturer. Final design and sign-off by a qualified engineer to IEC 60601-2-33.
